Organic Coffee Cultivation in Colombia

“I stood teetering on the steep slope of the coffee farm of Don Luis Maria Bueno. All my muscles were engaged to keep me upright. We were in Caldas, Colombia, in the indigenous community of San Lorenzo, high in the Andes mountains. This was the steepest-sloped coffee farm I had ever been on. I asked Don Luis how the heck he worked this steep land when I could barely stand on it. With a quick flick of his machete and a smile, he carved a shallow foothold in the soil, and I put my foot in it.” - Our VP, Lynsey Miller, recounts the understanding that began to take root while visiting our coffee farming partners in Colombia. Organic coffee cultivation is grossly outpaced by conventional farming there, and the contrast is stark. Here, coffee was inter-planted with fruits, tubers, and medicinal plants, all a manifestation of very deliberate and radical choices.
